MSC has eight Fast Sealift Ships (FSS), the
fastest cargo ships in the world. The eight FSSs are:
USNS Algol (AKR 287),
USNS Bellatrix (AKR 288),
USNS Denebola (AKR 289),
USNS Pollux (AKR 290),
USNS Altair (AKR 291),
USNS Regulus (AKR 292),
USNS Capella (AKR 293), and
USNS Antares (AKR 294). These ships are
nearly the length of an aircraft carrier. The Roll-on/Roll-off (RO/RO)
ships can travel at speeds of 30 knots. All eight ships combined can carry
equipment equivalent to one Army mechanized division. FSSs are ideal for
transporting tanks, helicopters, and other bulky military equipment. All the
FSSs are kept in Reduced Operating Status (ROS) and can be activated and
ready to sail in 96 hours.
